Definitely not mad about how my new scratch made glaze turned out! Love when science and art come together to make something beautiful science 🧪 👩🏻‍🔬 🎨 Next steps are going to be testing it out for food safety with some acid (lemon) and base (bleach) tests to ensure it’s not leaching, and that I can use it on dinnerware and drink-ware etc. This is @oldforgecreations first five floating base with 1% chrome added. Safety first… let’s attempt to mix my own glaze from scratch. If you have ever worked with commercial glazes they get super expensive quickly… so I’d figure why not use my masters degree in genetics toward this hobby a bit.

Opening the kiln is always fascinating and terrifying. I am still working through some issues with my dipping glazes. I’ve previously brushed on pint glazes and had zero issues but now moving up to bucket dry glazes for dipping I’ve had to troubleshoot specific gravity and some crazing and pinhole issues. To throw oil bottles on the wheel, I start by centering the clay – gotta make sure it’s nice and balanced but clearly not the case here 😬(too bad it’s the only one I actually recorded.) Then, I shape it into a cylinder, kind of like making a tall cup. Next comes the fun part: I pull up the clay to create the neck and measure out the hole for the pouring spout. I have a clay ruler I use for the hole to ensure it’s the perfect size after firing since clay shrinks when fired. Once it’s dry, I pop it in the kiln for the first firing. After that, I glaze it up, adding color or shine, before firing it again to seal the deal. When making these watering bells on the pottery wheel, I aim to throw multiple at one sitting, striving for uniformity while acknowledging that each bell inevitably develops its own unique character. Despite my efforts, they all end up with their own charm 😉. Each vessel has a single hole on top for your thumb to control water flow and a shower head like design of holes on the bottom for water flow. A watering bell functions as a gentle and controlled watering tool for plants. It is first placed in a sink or bowl full of water then lifted and held over the plant while placing your thumb on the top hole, you gently lift your thumb to release the suction and it provides a slow and even distribution of water, preventing soil disturbance and ensuring thorough hydration without flooding.   • Ceramic stoneware, shaped by hand, embodies a natural elegance and enduring strength. Born from clay nurtured by the earth, each piece carries the essence of the land from which it springs.

    Crafted with care and patience, the stoneware is formed into vessels, bowls, and sculptures, each bearing the imprint of the artist's touch. Slowly, it dries, embracing the subtle shifts of light and shadow as it finds its shape.

    In the dull roar of the kiln, the stoneware finds its first transformtion stage amogst the swirling heat. Here, it undergoes a transformation, as the earth's elements work their alchemy, turning clay into stone with a timeless grace.

    Bisque firing tempers the stoneware, imbuing it with strength and resilience.

    Then, like a canvas awaiting the artist's touch, the stoneware is adorned with glaze, a cloak of colors and textures that shimmer and dance and bring the piece to life. Then, in a final dance with fire, the stoneware finds its voice, as glaze and clay meld together in a symphony of color and texture.

    As the kiln cools, the stoneware emerges, imbued with the warmth of the earth and the fire's gentle embrace. Each piece bears the marks of its journey, a testament to the beauty of nature's artistry and the craftsmanship of the artists hands.

  • All clays are locally sourced from MN clay. Clay bodies are all cone 6 stonewear unless otherwise specified in the product description.

    Glazes are all Amaco and or Mayco commercially avaiable stoneware lines (Mid Fire Cone 5/6).All glazes used are lead-free and food safe.

    All tableware products have been tested to establish dinnerware status, due to possible variations in firing temperature and contamination.

  • Yes.

    It’s important to note that food-safe and non-toxic are two different features of pottery and are not interchangeable.

    food-safe = refers to the post-firing state of pottery

    non-toxic = refers to the product in its pre-fired state.

    All pieces are designed by Deckman Ceramics to be chip-resistant, microwave-safe, oven-safe, and dishwasher-safe. These features make the pieces very durable.

    All glazes and clays used by Deckman Ceramics are safe to use with food or drinks and do not contain lead or cadmium.

    All pieces sold by Deckman cermaincs are categorized as cadmium and lead-safe and defined by the The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be allowed for sale in the US.
